Q- Here are different opinions about what made India a democracy. How much importance would you give to each of these factors?

(a) Democracy in India is a gift of the British rulers. We received training to work with representative legislative institutions under the British rule.

(b) Freedom struggle challenged the colonial exploitation and denial of different freedom to Indians. Free India could not be anything but democratic.

(c) We were lucky to have leaders who had democratic convictions. The denial of democracy is several other newly independent countries show the important role of these leaders.

Answer- 

(a) Representation in British India was a very big achievement for the Indian freedom fighter who struggled a lot for making India independent. These institutions were not democratic in nature as it lacked accountability, universal adult franchise e.t.c. . Democracy in India is very big goal of the leaders of Indian Independence movement, the Constituent assembly and the people of India.

(b) Freedom struggle of India challenged the colonial exploitation of Britishers but it does not ensures a path to democracy. Countries such as Ghana had struggled against colonial exploitation but the country did not remain a democracy.

(c) Leaders of independent countries have a much larger impact and stake in forming democratic institutions. Nikrumah from Ghana was leading freedom fighters and instituted democratic reforms within his country yet he changed his path and eroded the democracies values of the office of president.
