Q- Give a brief description about the woodcutter community of Java- the Kalangs.
Answer- The Kalangs of Java were skilled forest cutter and they practised shifting cultivation. This community were so valuable that when the kingdom of Java split, the Kalangs families were equally divided between two kingdoms.
The Dutch tried to make the Kalangs work under them. They had a very special quality that without then it is very difficult to harvest teak. In 1770, the Kalangs resisted by attacking a Dutch fort but they were suppressed.
