Q- Surekha is an officer in-change of ensuring free and fair elections in an assembly constituency in a state. Describe what she should focus on for each of the following stages of election:
(a) Election campaign
(b) Polling day
(c) Counting day
Answer- (a) Election campaign:
Surekha should focus on providing a level playing field in which all candidates in an election have equal opportunities to conduct an election campaign. She should verify that the code of conduct is maintained by all parties and candidates such as no forms of bribery, use of government machinery e.t.c.
(b) Polling day:
There is a security in polling booth to conduct a free and fair election. The EVM (Electronic Voting Machine) and ballot boxes are secured to ensure that voting cannot be rigged. There are no instances of booth capturing, bribery or any criminal activity. There should also be availability of public amenities such as drinking water to ensure that the voters do not feel inconvenience.
(c) Counting day:
Surekha should ensure that the EVMs are secured and have not been tampered with. The counting should be done in a transparent manner and the results be declared without any form of unnecessary delay.
