Q- Differentiate between smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum. How is endoplasmic reticulum important for membrane biogenesis?
Answer- Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum:
1. Ribosomes are absent in Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum.
2. The main function of Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum is to manufacture lipids and fats.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum:
1. Ribosomes are present in Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum. In Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum ribosomes are present in the surface that is why Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum is called as rough.
2. The main function of Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum is to synthesize protein.
It is absolutely right that Endoplasmic reticulum is important for membrane biogenesis. Both Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum and Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum take part in membrane biogenesis. Protein from Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum are transported to Golgi apparatus to glycolisation. On the other hand Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum forms lipids and finally transported to Golgi apparatus. With the help of lipids and proteins, Golgi apparatus forms membrane.
