Q- If a crystal of potassium permanganate is placed on a clean layer of gelatin, the gelatin gradually becomes violet. The colour is more intense in the vicinity of crystal.

(i) Explain the reason for this observation.

(ii) How the process is important for living cell?

Answer- (i) The reason behind this observation is diffusion. Diffusion is the process of spontaneous movement of materials from a region of higher concentration or diffusion pressure to a region of lower concentration or diffusion pressure due to tendency of their molecules to spread uniformly.

(ii) Diffusion also very essential for living cells as it plays a vital role in movement of different material inside the cells.
