There are two main reasons behind this phenomenon: first of all the Earth rotates eastwards and the second reason is the tangential velocity of a point on Earth is a function of latitude as the velocity is essentially zero on the poles and it attains the maximum point in the Equator.
For example, if a cannon was fired northward from a point on the Equator then the projectile would land to the east of its due north path.
This variation is caused when the projectile was moving eastward faster at the Equator than was its target farther north.
In the same manner, in case the weapon was fired towards the Equator from the North Pole, the projectile would again land to the right of its actual path.
